The 12th Cyprus Energy Symposium was held on 15 November 2024, at the Royal Hall in Nicosia. The event was organised by the Institute of Energy South East Europe (IENE) and FMW Financial Media Way. The Symposium, entitled “The Big Energy Decisions”, brought together more than 30 energy experts who analysed issues related to gas, electricity and renewable energy sources (RES). The keynote speaker of the event was the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Christodoulides, who addressed the event. In addition, the President of the Parliament, Mrs. Anita Demetriou, the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, Mr. Giorgos Papanastasiou, as well as other officials from Cyprus, Greece and Israel participated.

The Director of ideopsis was an invited speaker for the Session: Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency. Mrs Charalambous presented the Energy Efficiency First Principle.

The topics of the Symposium included:

– Geopolitical and energy realignments in Europe and the region.
– Assessments of the international energy crisis.
– Cyprus’ next steps in the field of hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation.
– Cyprus’ potential to contribute to Europe’s decoupling from Russian gas.
– Results and prospects for energy cooperation between the countries of the region.
– High energy costs.
– Importance of gas resources in the energy transition.
– Investments of energy companies in the South-Eastern Mediterranean.
– Plans for gas pipelines from the Mediterranean to Europe.
– Exploitation of natural gas for electricity generation.
– Electricity cross-border interconnections.

The Symposium was an important platform for discussing the energy challenges and opportunities facing Cyprus and the wider Southeast Mediterranean region.
