The 29th National Conference “Energy & Development” organised by the Institute of Energy for South-East Europe (IENE), was successfully concluded on November 11 & 12 at the OTE Academy premises in Athens, marking 29 consecutive years of active contribution to the regional energy dialogue.
The conference brought together more than 80 distinguished senior executives from the energy sector in Greece and abroad, as well as representatives from international organisations, academic institutions, research centres and key stakeholders, who addressed crucial issues shaping the future of the energy landscape.
Key Topics and Insights
The conference agenda, designed by the scientific committee, explored a wide range of critical topics, including:
- electricity and natural gas markets in Greece and SE Europe
- development and upgrading of electricity transmission networks with emphasis on submarine interconnections
- energy storage systems
- offshore wind parks and supply-chain challenges
- high RES penetration and system balancing issues
Significant focus was placed on energy efficiency in buildings, the role of nuclear energy in decarbonisation strategies, and the critical importance of energy security, especially under the prism of the global Energy Trilemma (security – affordability – sustainability).

During the thematic session dedicated to Energy Efficiency and Business Challenges, the Director of Ideopsis Ltd participated as an invited speaker, presenting the emerging professional skills and qualifications required to comply with the updated EU Energy Efficiency Directive. Using Cyprus as a case study, her presentation highlighted the need for upskilling and reskilling, specialised workforce development and capacity building as essential components for businesses striving to meet new regulatory obligations and remain competitive under the evolving energy policy framework.

Additionally, IENE presented its triennial regional study, SE Europe Energy Outlook 2025, providing a detailed long-term strategic view for South-East Europe.
Investment Prospects & Hydrocarbon Potential
The conference concluded with discussions on investment opportunities within the energy sector amidst shifting geopolitical dynamics, as well as the potential exploration and utilisation of hydrocarbon reserves estimated to exist in the Greek territory.
